As an artist I have tried many techniques- stenciling caught my eye 5 years ago by chance whilst I was exploring quilting methods. It’s a traditional yet somewhat forgotten skill that really allows its designer to express and signature their work in the most creative way. Whether embellishing fabrics or creating elaborate block designs, stenciling is so versatile and allows so much room for development that it’s always a delight to both experiment with and teach this technique.I think I’ve stumbled across the perfect art which incorporates the potential for so many skills. From the inception of an idea, to line drawing an original design to the final labor of love – ‘quilting’; there are so many ideas and challenges just waiting to be made and explored. My first stenciled quilt “Soaring” won 2 prizes at Vic Quilters Showcase 2004 & 2nd place for Viewer’s Choice in 2005. “Bed of Roses” my second stenciled quilt took 3 prizes at the Victorian Quilters Showcase 2005, 1st place in Mixed Technique Quilt – Open, Highly Commended in Best of Show as well as Excellence in machine quilting– Professional. At the moment I am creating a range of stencils to develop into my next stage of quilt ideas. If stenciling is a technique you haven't explored, why not try a stencil quilt yourself? The results are definitely worth your investment of time and creativity. For those of you who need some assistance, I offer workshops and classes...and I’m always happy to offer advice via my blog, just log on and ask!
